...say this very same thing regarding children. If you want a short term per then do a bit of research and get a fucking short term pet. Its like a contract, if your not willing to sign a 50 year contract than by all means dont buy a fucking parrot!

I completely agree, and it just breaks my heart to see people who can just so carelessly drop a member of their family like that (though some may have actual credible reasons, still!) I'm hoping that when I'm able to get myself a dog that I can rescue.
As for short term pets, ones that like like a year or two like rats and small critters I guess they can be considdered short term. But that's a rather depressing way of thinking about it I think. >_>
You might want to look at their point of view. It could be any number of reasons they are not able to take their pets. Some are driving and don't want to subject the pet to being cooped up in a car on a cross country trip. Some are moving to places where pets aren't allowed. Don't always judge the pet owner harshly. While some are indeed just dumping pets, some are not doing so easily. Please keep an open mind when reading their posts. Just my thoughts on the matter. I have a cat and wouldn't want to dump her if I move. But I know my ex was forced to part with her cat when she moved cross country because a) she was driving there and didn't want to coop the cat up for that long and b) the living situation she was going to be in when she got there was not a pet friendly environment. She didn't want to part with her cat but had to do so.
My whole point is that I would not go somewhere that my pet would not be welcomed/ comfortable. It's just not an option for me. I have driven cross country and have always taken my pets with me. Pets are resilient and I would not trust any of my pets to someone else ever.
Master has moved cross country and to different states more than I can count on two hands - yet she has always taken her pets with her. Never has she left them behind.
I agree. When I moved away to college, my apartment didn't accept pets, but I had planned to leave my cat with my mom, since she really loved him and would be lonely. But now that I have Hamlet, I can't imagine giving him up. He's my baby. He'd forgive me for a car ride, I doubt he'd forgive me for dumping him on someone else. But then, I was in love with him from the first time I saw his picture.
also, re:pets. Not sure what to think, but I do agree with you that people in this society see their obligations as being "disposable" now. Your dog or cat should be treated like a family member. Then again, sometimes people do have their reasons.
The lack of responsibility in this culture, however, is sickening!
