I waited a long time to post this video, because a part of me really did not want vividcon to end this year. I had the most amazing, warmest experience, better even then my scholarship year, because it was the second time around, I knew people more, I wasn't as afraid of vidders. I was still pretty timid at first, of course, but I put on my game face and before I knew it, I wasn't faking it.
This video was deeply personal to me. I am an old school romantic, and I was feeling very romantic at the point in time that I made this. This is the love that I want, this kind of devotion. I consider myself fairly independent, but at the end of the day? I want someone to lean on. And there is no one more sturdy out there than Jihoo, of Boys Over Flowers, the Korean version. I fell in love with this drama, japanese version first, and then followed to other versions. This one? This is my favorite. Hands down. This Jandi is real. Goofy, but very serious, too.
I'd like to speak for a moment about the structuring of this video. I chose to frame this video in terms of the instruments Jihoo plays, the emotions he sends to Jandi through his songs, and by doing that, the moment where she sits with him at the piano became a very strong metaphor for me personally. I also double framed, using their one softest kiss, start to end, as bookends to their romance. This was, in part, to insist all of those experiences they shared were within that kiss, even if they hadn't, er, experienced them all yet. Toward the end, I used a more minor structural element, of including Jihoo's race during the final chorus, but it was one of my favorite choices, because I think it solidifies the what I am reiterating in that chorus, that he's going toward the finish line, that he will eventually win the girl.
I chose to vid to this song because it honestly felt like the perfect song. It was repetitive, unending, fueled by the heart, much like Jihoo's friendship and companionship to Jandi was. There is this one moment, and I wish I had been able to fit it within the video (but it just wouldn't work!) where he touches her face, and says so very softly, "My heart hurts," as if he is feeling emotions against his will. It was... ugh. Beautiful. I knew had to use this song to properly capture that feeling.
Visually, the ending colors are bright and a bit jarring on purpose. Throughout the video, I've used shooting stars, and floating glints as symbolism for their relationship, so I thought I should make the final moments reflect that. A star is brightest before it burns out. The moving reds and yellows are meant to being feelings, emotions, like that moment where you feel something so intensely you squeeze your eyes shut. And when your eyes are so tightly clossed, what do you see? What colors? How do they move? That's what I wanted to imitate.
Textured areas are intended to be Jihoo/Jandi as seen from a slightly different angle, perhaps Jandi's, but not specifically hers. Jihoo/Jandi as Jihoo is NOT seeing it, if that makes sense. Things he did not know were happening: Jandi returning his gaze, for instance. Him being her "fireman", putting out the fires burning her heart. Or however the show explained their relationship.
I put a lot of thought into this video. There are a lot of small moments, meant just for me, but I love when other people can be like, "Oh, I see what you did there." I'm trying to get back into the habit of making notes like this, so if you have any questions about why I did a certain thing, I'll be happy to answer them... at my own meandering pace, of course.
