It's question time.

Evenin'. Not much to report tonight. The second day of work went well. I actually had to make myself leave at the end of the day, and I wasn't exhausted when I got home. Plus, I didn't have trouble sleeping last night or waking up (much earlier than last year) this morning. Pretty remarkable, given my usual insomnia. I just hate that I'm ( Read more... )

RE: capitalisation of I anonymous August 6 2008, 05:13:54 UTC
Hi,

I can't remember my password here at work so I'll post as anonymous. I work at the Times of India editorial page, which is one of India's biggest English dailies. We had a policy change at the behest of the publishers a year or so ago, abolishing the capital I. The idea was that it signifies ego, because it is only when referring to yourself that you capitalise the letter, even in the middle of the sentence. Needless to say, it took some getting used to.

That is really interesting! I definitely prefer to capitalize "I", mainly because it just seems like proper English. But I can also see the reasoning behind the editorial decision -- that's something I hadn't even considered before. Thanks for the reply; I've learned something. :)

(And you're in India? Wonderful! I'd love to visit the country someday.)

:) It took us some time to get used to, also and we still try to circumvent it by moving the 'I' to the beginning of a sentence or not using it at all.

I am in New Delhi, in fact, lived here just about all my life. It's a crazy city (and country) but so very alive.

Oh, Alanna, I completely and totally concur with your point about PD with presenters who come in and just TALK all the time. It happens so much, and it's so frustrating when you think of how much schools pay them! It's something I've ranted about before previously, so I'm sort of glad it's the same where you are as here.

How hard can it be to be engaging when it's your specialty?!

And the Paris Hilton link was just what I needed to get through a day of writing a work program.

No kidding! It's so damned frustrating because Tuesday's presenter was all about project-based instruction and using Bloom's Taxonomy to keep students engaged and develop their higher-level thinking skills... yet instead of demonstrating that, she just stood up there and talked for three hours.

(And I'm sort of glad that it's a worldwide problem. ;)

Can you double check the link for the "Homecoming" review? I really loved that book too, but the link takes you to the story about small breasts. Thanks!
