I am so with you - I felt ambivalent about the new series at first (had some hopes they'd incorporate some of Richard Hatch's ideas) and then read the first spoilers...I still downloaded a couple of episodes and they far surpassed my worst expectations!

I don't mind slash at all - I write the stuff, after all - so that won't be a problem. If you choose to join telekis_vendiak, you'll see that a lot of adult stories (both slash and het) are recced, I just friends-locked those entries for the sake of young readers.
Re: new Galactica I read the spoilers, and when I understand what sort of changes they did to the original, I refused to watch as much as a minute of them. Come on, a female Starbuck, Boomer as a female Cylon, and everything looking like a 22nd century US sci-fi show, instead of the timeless aura of the original... those uniforms look like the ones Russian tram conductors used to wear in the 1960s!
Yes, I'm petty. But it's my prerogative, considering what they did to my favourite show.
I agree with you Richard Hatch version The Second Coming would have been a much better show to wathc. I tend to give new things a chance but I watched the first three epsiodes plus the pilot and was close to running for the hills so to say. Didn't like the new concept one bit. It is better going to read fanfictions of the old series even if it is slash. Not that I mind of course.
Well, I linked a lot of those stories to telekis_vendiak, although only the comm members can see the juicier recs. I don't mind slash, either, although the way too obvious sort of it (like McShep or Apollo/Starbuck in our current case) tends to bore me out of my head.
That's why I like Karen's stories. Sure, she did write her fair share of the obligatory A/S, but her best stories, "The Lieutenant's Daughter", "Warlord", "Out of the Past" or "Ties of Kinship" have other pairing or a different focus altogether. She's also a very good writer, technically, I like her style.
