The only thing I can think of (speaking as a former comic shop owner) is that Zanadu must have been burned heavily and often by pull services. Having substantial stock sitting in bins waiting for customers can be an iffy thing - particularly for new faces wanting huge lists. Better to leave the stock on the shelves and hope for the walk-by traffic.
You said something about them only having 50 or so lists tops - that may be legacy clients or just the Type-As who don't mind/enjoy doing a Previews checklist every month. It's clear they aren't encouraging the practice.
Eh, that's what the get for not knowing Xanadu starts with an "X". ;)
Anyway, I think you're right to cut and run. At $80-$100/month you certainly qualify as a "serious fan". Better to stick with a shop that understands the way you enjoy your collecting than settle for one who would suck the fun right out of it.
I don't think you were being unreasonable at all. The most I think a shop could ask of you is a weekly pick-up promise until they get to know you as a customer. (That "burned by the pull list thing can be a valid concern for new customers after all). And that way you could get to know their pull-staff to make sure your idea of "Core Avengers" matched theirs.
And isnt' the comic market still teetering on the edge? You think they'd be willing to at least try and meet a new cusomer half way...
