Ergo, drink wine and be saved. treadingdawn December 28 2008, 23:58:03 UTC
An acquaintance of Bacchus or not, Caspian fully believes the younger Pevensie brother should partake in a glass or two because he happens to have a bottle or three. The very first Telmarines were avid drinkers of spirits and that tradition has existed for generations up to the one searching for Edmund Pevensie now. He has been quiet lately and a birthday should not go to waste like this. A shadow follows Caspian in feline form, one golden eye winking as the cat pads along, curious as to what the tallest man in the house is doing.

"Edmund," asks the Telmarine in a casual voice while searching from room to room. He is careful to avoid Lucy, Susan, and Peter, which isn't so hard to do in a house of this generous size, and when it's one's intention to not be found. Needless to say, Caspian has already 'taste-tested' the rich red spirit. Oops.

"Caspian?" he tilts his head towards the Telmarine in a gesture of greeting. To be honest, his birthday was not really a priority for him right now. In fact he'd almost forgotten.

"Are you alright?" there was something different about Caspian. His movements were a little looser, his smile too easy.

"I have heard that on this day the world was blessed with good fortune," he explains in a rather vague but meaningful manner. See the glasses in one hand, bottle in the other? For the record he does maintain his balance, even if it appears that he might lose it should he lean too far to the left or too far to the right.

"Join me. We'll have a subdued celebration for no one should go uncelebrated completely," Caspian nudges Edmund.

"Good fortune? That's a little too much flattery, Caspian." Edmund smiles, although a little less freely than he would have before. And Caspian was stumbling, or at least off balanced. "Are you drunk?"

It all makes sense. The geniality, the nudging.

"What did you have in mind?"

"No. I do not fall prey to drunken behavior," the Telmarine shakes his head before coming to sit beside Edmund. See him open that bottle again and pour a glass for the Just. He doesn't spill a drop despite looking like he might. Caspian is rather good at this, habitual you could say. As for why he has already gotten started without the others... One, yesterday was not a pleasant day. Two, never drink alone. This in mind, he offers Edmund a full glass.

"Here. It's red. It's good. Trust me."

Why would you not trust this face, my friend?

"Then it's an obvious case of temporary imbalance." Ed teases just a little bit and takes the glass with one hand, looking down at it dubiously. "I haven't had any since Narnia." not that they ever skimped on the celebrating during their reign, or that they could, with the dryads and the fauns being the way they were.

He takes a sip and grimaces. Takes a little bit getting used to.

"That, is a valid argument," Caspian replies without thinking twice of how it undermines his own.

It doesn't really matter at this point, sitting down certainly helps to keep the young king from tipping over. Neither does he choose to lean against Edmund... yet. Meanwhile he pours a glass for himself and takes a generous sip followed by a soft huff. What has happened to the house these last two days? Everything seemed rather good during Christmas, especially after Christmas. He raises his chin slightly and turns to look at Edmund.

"How does it feel then," asks the Telmarine, not at all specific as to what he means. That may be the point.

"How does what feel?" There are a couple of options as to what Caspian's talking about. "If you're talking about being fifteen, I don't really feel any different. If you're talking about the wine, well. I suppose I'll get used to it." he takes another sip. Ed supposes that in wine terms, it's pretty good.

He can stand to be around Caspian. At least the Telmarine isn't hovering about him all the time, peering at him when he supposedly isn't looking but really is. Walking around with the unwritten are you okay on his face, like the High King.

Caspian spares both of them the irritable response that first comes to mind, which is I remember being fifteen because it wasn't all that long ago. But the transition has happened for Edmund twice now and Caspian cannot imagine that at all, not even with the assistance of a good vintage red. He takes another sip, the dryness of the spirit hardly fazing. It's a better subject as any, he knows the Just has not been forthcoming with his troubles and if there's anything for certain, it's best not to force it out of him. Leave the bullish leverage to someone like Peter.

"A glass or two, you will remember it," nods the brunette before tipping his head back as if to stare at the ceiling. He is giving himself a moment before speaking. "I think I was weened on brandy," Caspian remarks as he brings his chin back down to stare at the dark fluid in his hand, almost sadly.

And he's right. Turning older isn't a big deal for him, for any of them, really. Because the ages they are at right now aren't their true ages, no matter how young they look.

"Maybe. But I don't think drinking more than a glass would be wise." Ed says cautiously, taking another sip, getting used to the taste. It brings back memories, really.

"Brandy? Why's that?" a glance at the Telmarine and he can see that it's not really the greatest of memories.

"I don't know," Caspian replies, glass raised once again as if to toast Edmund, but he doesn't clink rims before sipping again.

"But it tasted good," he continues and carefully places his glass on the table. Brown eyes look around the interior, wherever they are, the upstairs reading room? The downstairs study? Not that Caspian is actually trying to determine what room they're in... he isn't that unaware of his surroundings. At least, he doesn't think so. Anyway, in addition to that he is making sure certain individuals haven't come by. No, they are alone. The Telmarine leans closer to the Just, eyes narrowing to a near seriousness that's underlined by the way his mouth nears Edmund's ear.

"There are some things I need to discuss with you, my good man."

Wow. Caspian's really enthused about this wine, isn't he? A little bit too enthused. The Just raises a brow but doesn't say anything. It would probably be lost on Caspian in this state anyways.

"We're in the study." Edmund says dryly, after realizing what the confused look and the extreme observation is for.

And isn't the Telmarine being a little too touchy-feely in this situation? The Just feels a little bit out of place here.

"And those are?"

Where to start? Now that the younger Pevensie brother is asking Caspian isn't quite sure what to address first. There is the matter of that day at the train station, what it meant, and why Edmund appeared so disturbed by it. There is his birthday, something they should be handling with greater cheer, but the unfortunate timing of it cannot be helped. Rather, it's more accurate to say the City's timing has poorly collided with Edmund's. And then there is that, the thing that has kept Caspian willfully distant from Peter. Does he really know? Does he honestly suspect? Is it Caspian's place to discuss it as a friend? All these things, he feels, are better approached with a good bottle of wine. It is a sad state of affairs when such a thing has become such a tool. But what else is there for a Telmarine king to do? This is a good time as any ( ... )

Edmund is not really a physically affectionate person, and never has been. He's not one for sappy hand-holding or prolonged hugs or anything like that because, well, boys will be boys.

So suffice to say he's perhaps just the slightest bit uncomfortable with Caspian leaning on him, friends or not.

With a grunt, he pushes the king off of him, making sure he lands comfortably enough on the couch. It's the least he can do.

This isn't because his height and stature make Edmund seem a bit dwarfish, right? Just checking. Caspian falls onto his side with ease and he even shifts to make himself more comfortable as if he had anticipated this push or simply hadn't noticed he'd gone from sitting up to halfway lying down at all. But the wine is still fresh and so in one Telmarine's slumber it is one Just King's job to finish what he can. Don't let it go to waste.
