I don't know very much about radioactivity outside of the basic chemistry/physics stuff, but I am starting to get irked by the media lumping all forms of radiation into this single ball of evil. Alpha? Beta? Gamma? Isotopes? It will all keeeeeeel you!!
BTW, I like to take pride in the fact that I am probably the only person to have ever fursuited a ground zero. There are a couple more blast sites (underground) in New Mexico that I want to hit up in suit just to further the mystique. *lol*
It is a rather awesome subject. ^^ I'm always poking at nuclear science as well, if only to read up on any new developments in the field. I've been wondering if all the new models of micro-power plant are going to get used, or if we're going to leap right over into some other tech for power generation. The Polywell guys seem to be doing quite well for themselves with the WB-8 fusor.
I remember hearing about the Polywell wiffle-ball a few years ago too. There's this Google-talk (which you've probably already found by now) going through all the gory details in a quite entertaining way (he reminds me of an old Econ prof I used to have!) and once again sounding like it was pretty much already there if someone would just fund it a bit further... good to hear they're apparently still plugging away at it.
Here it is condensed quite skilfully into 1/3 the time.
I've been hearing about Thorium reactors for at least 5 years now. I'm really curious what's (obviously) still holding them back, since they sound like a pure miracle-tech to hear the boosters talk about them...
Yes, it was July 2001 in fact. Gentilly-2 in Becancour, Quebec. Saw the storage pool, stood next to the turbine shaft, saw the elaborate door to the reactor area, got to ride the radiation detector. All the ridiculous security around the plants nowadays is about as meaningful as what we go through at the airport.

I don't know if you've watched it, but take a look at this Google talk about thorium reactors. It's long, but I thought it was super interesting.
