Part 1 - Maybe with love
She's growing distant. It's not that she's unhappy or that she doesn't love him anymore but the way she shies away from kisses every so often makes it obvious she has something on her mind. Leo is no use at all, telling him to talk to Phoebe, not realizing that this really is nothing Coop didn't know before. Henry takes him for a drink, which is nice, but not helpful in the least. Piper gives him those borderline motherly looks that tell him she knows exactly what's going on but wants him to find out for himself. Paige on the other hand is angry and Coop can't get rid of the notion that this should give him a pretty damn good hint as to what is going on. In the end it's Phoebe who tells him. Not with words but love's torment written in her big brown eyes. Cole.
Coop never gives her and opinion, he never warns her of pain or tries to avoid pain for himself. He knows well enough that the heart accepts no tyrant, love will always find a way. That's what he tells Phoebe too, refusing to make her choice for her.
She never tells him which path she chose, and it's not until he finds his favourite chair occupied one afternoon that Coop knows what her heart told her to do.
"I've heard a lot about you," Cole says, a small, confident smile on his handsome face.
"Likewise," Coop says tightly, faintly wondering how much time he has left before Phoebe will kick him out - maybe he shouldn't wait for that.
"Oh really? What has she told me about you?" Cole narrows his eyes in amusement. Coop shrugs, making a vague movement with his hand.
"I know that you broke her heart," he says finally and then after a pause adds. "And I know she broke yours."
Cole's face freezes into an unreadable mask but Coop can tell no one has ever considered him to be just as hurt as Phoebe must be.
"So what now?" he breaks the awkward silence. "Do you expect me to just step aside and give you two another chance?"
"Not necessarily," Cole smiles and with a quick movement pulls Coop into an unexpected, passionate kiss. Coop's heart is beating fast, he finds it hard to breathe, and all he can do when Cole lets go again is gape at the other man, lost for words.
One would think he has come to expect the unexpected in his line of work. But when the bedroom door opens and he sees Phoebe come out, an uncertain, pleading look on her face, and he realizes what it is they both want of him all he can do is stare for a while.
"We've tried everything," Phoebe whispers.
"Maybe with you..." Cole says with a small squeeze to Coop's arms and he finds himself unable to refuse.

Part 2 - Secrets and Arguments
"You're doing it again," Cole said, his piercing gaze never releasing Phoebe's guilty look. His voice was calm, almost nonchalant but he was obviously burning with hurt anger underneath the facade.
"Give her time," Coop said silently. "This is a hard decision to make."
"Bringing me back was the hard decision, I don't see why this makes such a difference."
"You wouldn't, would you? Look, maybe... maybe it's supposed to be like this," Phoebe argued desperately. "You know, maybe... it's better if we just keep this between us."
"I won't be your dirty little secret, Phoebe," Cole snapped.
"You have to admit, it's not fair to ask this of him," Coop said, putting a comforting hand on Phoebe's shoulder but she shrugged him off.
"I just don't want all that quarreling and suspicion to start again. Our relationship almost broke up my family last time around."
"Last time around I was possessed by the Source of all evil, in case that slipped your mind," Cole hissed between his teeth. "He wasn't exactly the epitome of a perfect brother-in-law."
"Ok, so what do you want me to do? Just forget the past and swallow all my fears overnight?"
"Three weeks is hardly overnight!" Cole yelled.
"I can't just give up everything for you."
"Don't you think I know that by now, Phoebe?"
"Cole, please," Coop tried to intervene but neither listened.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You never stopped doubting me. I proved my love for you over and over again and all I got in return was rejection."
"Guys, please calm d-..."
"You've tried to kill my sisters more often than I can count, Cole. That wasn't exactly the best way to win me back, was it?"
"You don't even realize it, do you? You still think you're the only one who got hurt."
"Cole, Phoebe, let's just discuss this as adults..."
"Oh, shut up!" both Phoebe and Cole yelled at the same time, fed up with Coop's constant efforts to calm them down. When they realized they have spoken at the same time they both burst out laughing their anger fading away and Coop joined in too, with obvious relief. Sometimes those two really behaved like children and the arguments were pretty tiring but he wasn't going to argue, at least they led to quite amazing make up sex.
