It’s not the first time she asks nor will it be the last.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
Her chin is hard with inquisitive determination but her eyes are gentler than you would have thought possible. It’s no use but you answer her anyway.
“He’s teaching me how to live with myself.”
She furrows her eyebrows and opens her lips to protest. You steel yourself for the superlatives of your incomparable moral superiority but she proves she can still surprise you.
“Are you in love with him?”
“That’s not the point,” you lie, ignoring her knowing smile.
