For years Cole thinks it’s just a harmless game, nothing of true importance, and can’t see he’s crippled by this nameless passion.
It keeps him from a fast victory over Phoebe’s heart before his own could catch fire but won’t let him embrace the promise of redemption in marriage either, pushing him off the cliff again, forcing him to fight darkness alone. It saves him from death, anchoring him in a life he abhors and dooms him to eternal limbo - tired of living but unable to die.
All of this is Alex’s fault. And finally, Cole is prepared to act.
