Sorry for the caps but I had to get your attention. Now that I do please read on.

There is this lovely bunch of people who are invading your privacy on LJ. They have created this "LJ Find" where you can type in anybody's username and be able to see ALL of their entires. Appearntly every Lj user is in this unless you tell them to remove you. Meg shadowhispererRead more... )

Apparently, some company thought to create a search tool for LJ. It allows you to look people up by their username. Spiffy? Not so much. If someone searches for your handle, it occasionally spits out PRIVATE and LOCKED entries yours, allowing strangers access to your most intimate thoughts on whim. Everyone has been automatically added to this search function, and you have to manually request removal here if you don't want random people poking around your journal.

At least, that's what I've gathered.

What Meg said. I fail at making sense when I'm pissed or in a rush. So I edited it a bit.

Christ Almighty, I just googled myself! It never even occurred to me that would happen. I don't really get all this because I'm basically an LJ moron, but it's scary. I don't put much in my journal but the thought that people could just Google you or something is horrifying. I wouldn't exactly want to advertise to the world my Pirates obsession. Or the rather explicit sex that is in many of them. Is there a way to stop this if it's public?

I suppose this very post will viewable shortly. BTW, I love James's pissed off face, that's how I'm feeling right about now.

Well search engines only pick up your public entires. So if yuo want to stop them go and make your entries Friends Only under the security option you get wen you are making a post.

Thanks for the advice. People will be able to read "friends only" if I "friend them?" Dumb question. It just freaks me out that all that info is out there in cyberspace somewhere. The internet is both good and terrible.

No problem. ^^
Yeah people can only see the "friends only" posts if you have them listed as your friend.
