...which is apparently customary amongst Episcopals, or so it would seem.

I remember exchanging the greeting with a friend, lo these many years ago; he was a Lutheran minister, and I'm Catholic.

That would be my guess, yes. (I was trying to come up with a one-word description of the churches in question and came up blank; "liturgical" fills the bill nicely.)
