Hi there,

I'm TARDIS-Tara and I own wittylittleknitter.com

I'm knitting a Scarf right now in Vanna's Choice.

I'm using:

Two Skeins of Beige 123
One Skein of Olive 174
One Skein of Charcoal 151
One Skein of Brick 133
One Skein of Toffee 124
One Skein of Burgundy 148
One Skein of Mustard 158

Jo-Ann's Fabrics was having a sale on Vanna's Choice and it cost $20 for the lot.

I really prefer Brown Sheep Nature Spun or Cascade 220 for knitting the Scarf, but you can't beat Vanna's Choice if money is an issue.

If nothing else, you can always bring a printout, DVD cover, magazine, or something else containing a photo of the scarf you like to the store, and simply match it by eye.

I just started knitting about nine months ago and my first project was also 'the scarf'. Personally, I would recommend putting the search for the perfect colors on the back burner, and just find seven that look close enough for your first go. In the time it takes you to knit your first one, you'll undoubtedly find colors that match very well with the original. At least, that's how I approached the situation, and it does kind of help to know how some of the colors knit up before compiling a huge stock of skeins.

I'm working on my second Who scarf right now. I made both out of a combination of Red Heart Soft, Bernat Satin (worsted, not sport), and Caron Simply Soft on US 7s. Both turned out about 12' long. The colors I used are:

Red Heart Soft: paprika
Red Heart Soft: leaf
Red Heart Soft: toast
Red Heart Soft: honey (not a really accurate yellow, but the best available in the soft texture)
Bernat Satin: plum heather mist
Bernat Satin: charcoal (a new color; you might have to order online, but the color's much better than the lighter greys available)
Caron Simply Soft: bone

One skein of each should suffice (I used a 7oz skein of Caron; the others don't come in different size skeins). I like using the soft texture acrylics because they're, well, softer than Vanna's Choice. If you do decide to go with Vanna's Choice, though, the color list by TARDIS Tara up above is a good one.

I don't know what varieties of Patons you have there, but I'm planning to do one in all Patons Merino Totem DK eventually. Not all the colours match, but I do love this yarn, and I'm not allergic to it. I can sacrifice accuracy for wearability.

http://patons.biz/Colour_range.asp?yarnid=13

Beige: 4305
Purple: 4276 or 4274, haven't decided.
Red: 4284, I think.
Brown: 4283, far too dark.
Khaki/green/whatever: 4290, far too green.
Grey: 4295

And I've just noticed the yellow I've been using this whole time, that is of that line, isn't listed on that page. The ball band says the yellow is 4286, but it does seem to invalidate my entire suggestion. I may substitute the beige for the yellow, and use one of the much paler colours for the beige.

As for needles, I'm using 3.75mm, or US 5/UK 9. I did mess up a bit, so I've knit it in two halves, which I'll later sew together, but the needles have held up just fine so far.

I'm reasonably certain they'd be fine with the whole thing.

I am considering going up a couple of sizes next time, to 4.0mm/US6/UK8, or maybe even to 4.5mm/US7/UK7, but that's more of a length issue than a needle issue, and I should see how the length looks once I've put it together before I decide.
