Series: Black Helicopters

Summary: Given the level of secrecy and security blanketing the place, Area 51 itself was a bit of a letdown. The collection of utilitarian buildings wouldn't have looked out of place in any military installation Rodney had ever seen. There were no flying saucers parked on the tarmac; there were no aliens roaming the halls. (Okay, not that he could tell. The vast majority of aliens that Rodney had met looked human enough at first glance. And he knew that at least a few, like Teal'c, had been granted permission to live and work on Earth.)

No, the strangest thing about Area 51 was that it didn't feel strange at all. Here he was, in the mecca of conspiracies and illicit government research -- inside the very shadow institution that not so long ago, a lifetime apart, he'd striven to expose -- and Rodney just... fit in, from day one. It was like coming home.

(Well, to be honest, it was more like waking up on Christmas and discovering a Cray-2 supercomputer under the tree, when you'd asked Santa for a Commodore 64.)

Oh hell, this was supposed to be finished the middle of last year. And I totally missed the deadline for Big Bang, but that's what happens when you end up writing enough for two.

So basically I admit that I was a horrible tease, and I hope it turns out to be worth the wait.

(Yes, there's one more big story planned after this, where things will all fall together in a train-wreck sort of way. I hope.)

As always, blame falls on Frostedelves for encouraging me to do bad things. Mecurtin stood by with a whip and made me clear up the muddy bits, and Dossier has eagle eyes. And I know there were more people who glanced over parts of this and had lovely input. Many thanks!

I also owe a special argh to Tekenduis, who linked me a Nickelback song and said, No really, I know the band is suck but this is actually kinda not-bad. That damned thing on repeat became my running soundtrack for writing (and is coincidentally the best Ronon song ever).

I do recommend reading Black Helicopters in order:

Black Helicopters at Dawn
Big Dish Guy
Wrong End of the Rescue
Tensile Strength
Black Mountainside
Blown Away

Blackout Conditions will eventually make its way to AO3.
