And well he might smile! I love the rhyming, the way they're enjoying each other, the edges to everything.

A production of A Midsummer Night's Dream I saw in college first showed me how aggression and fear and desire could work together for these characters. Puck was played by a black woman who twined bonelessly around ivy-draped pillars and let Oberon pull her across the floor without touching her. The implication (for me) was that Oberon and Titania ruled because they were the most desirable, the most compelling, the strongest and the most delectable beings in Faerie. The best at bestowing pain and pleasure, often simultaneously. Terrifying and irresistible. The pictures that appeared recently on my dashboard did seem to be from a production in the same vein, and I can't express how delighted I am to read a story by you similarly inspired.

Oh yes. And I wanted that edge to it, and wanted to enjoy that edge, but needed them to both want it and to need each other, so having them as complementary parts of some eternal fairyland whole worked much the best for me. :) And I just couldn't get that dynamic with Castiel, so Dean it was. :)

Yes. Castiel can be edgy, erotic, even playful, but it's hard to see him as Puck. I know it's an appeasing euphemism, but there's still something odd about invoking a fairy as Robin Solemnfellow. Gabriel and Dean both have a mean streak; Castiel and Sam have plenty of darkness, but their cruelties are usually unintentional.

Yes - where I could see the similarities were in Castiel's curiosity in poking around at humanity, and his simultaneous detachment from actual human feeling in doing so - even carrying out Gabriel's pranks on his instruction - but as soon as you have Oberon (even Trickster!Oberon) as the instigator of a solemn Puck's pranks, the whole thing begins to fall apart, and I could maybe have made that work except that I was simultaneously trying to make a sexualised and sexually teasing Castiel and... yes. Too many threads to pull together in a short space of dialogue for the sake of a basic PWP. :)

(... maybe Sam is a very gangly Mustardseed. and scowls about it.)
