Any chance of a closer look at the leaves? The bark, and what I can tell of the leaf shape, looks like eucalyptus, but I've never seen one with that spreading canopy- I remember them mostly as upright trees.

Eucalypts, especially blue gums, were deliberately planted across California as fast-growing timber. They've done so well they've had to introduce Australian insects to try and get rid of them again.
