From up here, you could see the older part of town without a problem. The park was in sight and there wasn't the glow of the portal that Kyle knew would come. They had some time yet. "Why do you like it quiet?" John asked curiously. He was more relaxed here than he had been for most of the weekend. Maybe it was the quiet.

"At HQ, there's always a hum. It's the equipment down on the bottom levels. Out on patrol, noise means something's coming. Even back in LA, it was different. It was silent, not quiet. The air was empty. Dead. Here you can see the town but the quiet makes it look like everything is okay. Normal. You can think for a second that it could be like this forever."

He looked over at Kyle, paying very close attention to the answer. He'd heard about Judgment Day and his responsibility since before he could remember, but he'd never really met someone affected by it before. It was scary, a little, to think that people like Kyle would be relying on him.

John shifted a little to lean his head against Kyle's shoulder.
