I'm sort of in the same situation as you. FH is in the wedding industry and I am a professional musician and training for clergy so the personal and professional lines between us and a lot of our vendors are pretty blurred ( ... )

For your friend who has just finished seminary, how about a donation in his name to the hospital where he'll be interning? It's fairly traditional to make donations to your officiant's church if they have one, and I think that making a donation would be a nice way to acknowledge his new spiritual role, instead of a gift.

For your DJ friend, I think a gift and a really nice thank you card, along with a promise to offer yourself as a reference to new clients would probably be a nice way to go, gift or gift card depending on what you think he would like better.

Friends or not/ start-up or not - they're saving you a boat load of cash...so give them a nice gift. Either CASH - or a visa gift card so that they can use it anywhere - not just a restaurant.

Plus good referrals too....

If it makes you feel better - think of it as "investing" in their future businesses...or honoring their expertise.

I'm a wedding officiant. I did my best friend's wedding (and it was one of the first weddings I ever did). She gave me a gift similar to that she gave her bridal party (handmade earrings and a tote bag), and I would have loved a heartfelt card, too.

I think a nice card with either a small gift and a larger donation to the hospital he'll be interning at would be perfect (especially if he's doing this for you gratis). So like, a $20 gift and a $50-$100 donation would be really well thought out and sweet. If he is charging you, leave off the donation, and just do the small gift and card.

As for the DJ, again, a nice card would be great, and then a Gamestop gift card or another place you know he'd really like is awesome.
