Personally, I'd say out-of-towners are exempt from having to bring something. I would get annoyed if I were traveling for a wedding and then asked to somehow bring food as well.

agreed. Most potlucks tend to not have out of towners bring something. I'd feel odd buying something from the grocery store to a potluck anyways. Let alone having to find a grocery store

make sure people bring utensils to serve their dish with, and have masking tape and a sharpie on hand to make sure people can label their dishes with their names in case they get left behind.

Have people make labels or send you lists of what's in their dish so that you can make labels to set by the dish, for allergy purposes
