I don't have any tips for you, but I just wanted to say that it sounds wonderful. I would have loved to do something like that if our guest list was smaller. As it is, FH's family alone is almost 40 people. Good luck! I'm sure it's going to be great!

Yeah, this is half the size of our first guest list. Extremely tight budgets require some sacrifice. That said, it's going to be so much more intimate this way, which I've come to realise is what I'd prefer.

Thanks so much for the encouragement!

I had a friend who did a pot luck reception & she had people RSVP with the type of dish they were planning on (salad, side, dessert, etc.) that way she didn't have 495847987 pasta salads (well, not that many - but you get the idea).

She also had them each bring a copy of the recipe so that she could create a small "recipe book" after the weeding.

Good luck!

The last pot luck I went to had everything sorted out by last name. So A-H brought salads, J-Q brought side dishes and R-Z brought desserts. There weren't enough desserts, but it turned out well.

Maybe you could do it where locals bring salads and side dishes and out of towners bring desserts? Desserts like cookies travel well, plus it would be easy to run to the market to pick up something. If people have a dish they really want to bring, they'll find a way to bring it

Maybe on your RSVP cards you can have a spot with something like "I plan on bringing ________________________ to share." So that way you know what you're getting in advance. No surprises that way.

That alphabetical idea is neat, but since it's going to be a lot of families, there'll be a lot of the same last names.

Yeah, figuring out what to do with out-of-towners is a bit of a tizzy. Desserts might work, though. :) And I do tend to forget that someone might have a dish that they really want to bring.

I think we'll be figuring out a way for guests to let us know what they're bringing.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I haven't done it myself but I remember reading a number of posts and threads on Offbeat Bride from people who had; I bet there are lots of good tips there! :)

I've done a bit of searching on OBB already, but thanks!

I would spend $200 and hire some catering staff, so that the people who love you can enjoy your wedding, instead of cleaning up, or refilling stuff.

If I had the $200 to spare, that would be great. We might be hiring a friend of my mum's to take care of things like that, though.
