Twitter vs. Pownce vs. Instant Messaging: Twitter.com and Pownce.com are nearly the same thing. Twitter has messages limited up to 140 characters. Pownce has no limitation and has the ability to send files / links / events as well. Pownce has Amazon S3 technology baked in for the file transfers and such. Both have a free service. Don't mistake this for favoritism on my part. I see little purpose in taking up either, but come on now... "pownce" sounds like something conjured up by a poor AOL typists committee. :)

A bunch of the older folks on my team know the Buzz, the guy who started Twitter... he did that when he left Blogger. :P

I think I would like Twitter a lot more if the tweets answered "what are you thinking about right now" rather than "what are you doing right now".

As you allude to, these types of sites aren't about technology, they're about the community. Twitter is simpler and such, but without friends on it I wouldn't use it.
