'You know, they call me the cautionary whale...'

Okay so... It's been a while. And I've been up to a lot so this could get a bit long.

I last left off on a Sunday two weeks ago after Allie and I had been out blackberrying.

One day early that week we watched Juno. We both loved it and I was particularly taken by the soundtrack which was of the really mellow, laid back variety ( Read more... )

Ah, Dylan Moran. I've been wanting to get to know him better. After Shaun it's hard to think of him as a stand-up comic. I wonder if that's available at Netflix.
Still haven't watched Let the Right One In. Usually I watch TV shows and cartoons on DVD during the week, and save up the actual movies for the weekend (though I did watch The Monster That Challenged the World last night), so I'm semi-planning to get to it tomorrow night. I'm glad to hear that you liked it; it's good to hear good reviews of it, because on its face it sounds a little silly, so even with all the folks who liked it I approach with some trepidation.

Moran's pretty good in the TV series Black Books, too, if they don't have Monster. I prefer his stand-up though.

And I'll be curious to know what you thought of Right One In. I found it captivating if not even remotely scary.

I'm watching it now. You're right, so far at least it isn't scary, but man, that bit with the cats was creepy, even though the CGI wasn't real well-realized.

Okay, I'm finished. I was impressed by it, but I'm going to watch it again in a day or two...I don't like to make judgments about good movies on just one viewing, particularly one like this. It was impressive visually. You were totally right about that. The director seems to have taken some lessons from David Lynch's work, both in terms of simple framing and pacing, and also in a narrative sense. I love Lynch, but being a fan of his is a lot of work. I get the impression that I'll need to do the same here.
I want to try to draw more from a few scenes, particularly the one in the swimming pool at the end and the scene in the bed. So I'm definitely going to watch it again and dissect it a little bit more.
Not right now, though. When you watch something moving and thought-provoking, it's important to then depressurize yourself with something plotless and insanely violent, so right now I'm watching Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior. I will for now, though, agree with everyone on the IMDb message boards that I really haven't ever seen ( ... )
