It is well-known that they are living entities with their own will, even the common Runes with their lesser consciousness, but hardly anyone talks about what sort of entities they are

Even the simplest of people has skills that you or I do not. One can't afford to be picky about the source of help in a crisis; indeed that might serve as a reasonable definition of "crisis" itself.
