A handsome ad, but it doesn't date from the Civil War period (1861-1865.) R.F.D. (Rural Free Delivery) was instituted by the Post Office in the 1890s, and the ad is even later. Fouts & Hunter's Cozy Cab was manufactured in the early 20th century, according to the newspaper article on this web page.

"lighter by 200 pounds" I'll bet that the horse appreciates that fact. Makes me glad that mail delivery is nicely handy where I live and I don't need to go out in weather like this for very far to get it.

it reminds me of one of the books in laura ingalls wilder's "little house" series, that she and almonzo were courting, and he had a buggy like this, which switched from open to closed, and had curtains that closed around it made of something like vinyl that held the weather out.
