Kaylee's characterisation and voice in this are wonderfully spot-on and I like how she thinks about Jayne. Interesting that you said this is pre-series, because that would go some way to explaining Jayne's dislike of Simon and then Kaylee still can't use a gun...

Thanks!

Yes, I've always figured much of Jayne's dislike of Simon comes from Jayne having a thing for Kaylee. Didn't either Joss or Adam Baldwin say as much at some point? I also figure that knowing Kaylee, she'd just use the prospect of shooting lessons to get close to Jayne, and then, well...nobody would really learn much about guns, you know? ;-)

Yeah, I think Adam Baldwin said he played it that way. It certainly comes across that way in the first episode when Kaylee was shot, but I'd always though of it as unrequited or him never having said anything to her about it, but this works better I think, because Kaylee is the type of girl up for anything and she would think of Jayne the same way, but then break it off for whatever reason and he'd still have feelings...and yep, you've now changed the fanon in my head :)

Yup, my long and involved fanon for them is something like - they get together, cause as you said, Kaylee's up for anything and Jayne's got a crush, then for whatever reason (probably realizing Jayne will never commit to anything more than regular sex) Kaylee breaks it off and wants nothing more to do with him on that level, but Jayne still carries his torch, leading to Simon-dislike, etc. So, basically exactly what you said. ;-)
