I am resisting editing what I've written. Now, coming back after a writer's block is always hard because I make more mistakes, am less smooth, less good than when I've been writing regularly for months. So yes, I ran into a few issues in these two drafts (yes, two) and now I'm resisting editing them. Because you know, then I have to figure out how ( Read more... )

frustration is for the frustrated, writing

The editing process is daunting because it is all about corrections, re-thinking things, and facing the challenge of making what you want to come across on the page work. But it is also fun because it means you're done all the heavy lifting and it's all about playing and tweaking.

If the editing is threatening you with another block and you have a new idea, I don't see a problem with beginning something new. As you said, you can go back to the editing; those stories are already in the final phases.

Maybe reevaluate in a week or two if you end up with like four stories that have been to a beta, then maybe you should sit down and pick one to work on until completion.

Until then. Go MUSE go!

Yeah, I think I'm not ready to edit yet, especially since I started with two really complicated drafts and they need a very precise hand. For now, I can let them sit there.

The muse is going. 2K in, it's going to be quite a bit longer :)

If you have the urge to write, then write! Editing can be done later, and you could argue that you'll be a more objective and therefore better editor by getting some distance from the fic anyway.

That's a good point, though it's been two weeks already. Either way, I'm writing :)

I wouldn't say I enjoy editing, but I enjoy that it means I've produced something and it enables me to make it better than it can be just with fingers flying over keyboards.

Yay for fic ideas, and frankly? I usually edit as I go, but in doing so will stump myself for way longer than I should over what turns out to be nonsense stuff. Get the skeleton built. Add flesh in phases. :)

I do edit as I go, but then the betas get a crack at it and usually rip it to pieces and force me to do better :).

Add in phases, I like this! I'll keep it in mind :)

New writing is now up to 7K. Editing can wait, indeed :)
