Seems a perfectly reasonable thing for a geek type to say to me. But then again, I do live in Cambridge, and am employed in a professional geek job, so I burned that bridge from both ends when I came to it a long time ago.

... Which reminds me, I was hearing some more stories about a friend's dad recently. His vocation was being a sort of ham-radio guru. Many of the people who turned up to his (sadly recent) funeral were people he'd spoken with many times over t' wireless, but had rarely met in person.
(Also he used to pick up cross-chatter from Vietnam back in the day. Short-wave radio signals travel quite far.)
I guess the current situation of frequently corresponding on teh megainterwebs but hardly ever going out for a beer is similar in many respects. Except that modern is littler, which is nice.
