Ahhh, I am so excited for your Sentinel/Guide fic, and I'm intrigued about Briefs with Wings. God, but you are so prolific, I am so envious :) How do you do it?
I'm lucky that I can write quite fast when I have the story in my head. I tend to think about the story (telling it to myself in my head) at least once before starting to actually write. For the sentinel/guide story I had a very detailed outline that I could work from. That way I know exactly where I'm going (even if the written story isn't always 100% what I imagined first).
See, if I create a detailed outline, I run into two problems:
1. If it's too detailed, I feel as though I've already written the story, and the urge to get it down is gone. 2. I change my mind A LOT, so even if I create an outline, I think, "Oh man, I like this idea better, I'm going to do that. Or, ooo, I like this idea..."
And that's if I can even figure out the plot. I have a couple vague fic ideas that I'd love to write, but I'm not sure how to plot it out.
So I really, really envy your long, plotty fics. They're always well written and entertaining :)
I definitely can relate to 1. I had to force myself to actually write out the sentine/guide fic because I was mentally done with it.
2 actually doesn't happen as often for me. It's mostly only details that change. One thing that tends to happen is that when I intend for John and Rodney to only slowly get closer and realize their attraction to each other, they still fall for each other immediately. But the foundation of an idea usually doesn't change for me.
I think I'm pretty good at finding the arc in a plot. Or realizing that there is none (and as such no story), which is also important, so that I don't spend time on a story that is going nowhere.
Do you have an example for a vague fic idea, where you don't know how to plot it out?
