I think my efforts to break the work/slump cycle have paid off, and I've actually done a bit more this month than previously...

Films: Finally, we got around to watching some new films. Eight new films, to be exact. Brief reviews here and here.

Books: The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield, is an odd story, about a bookish young woman

Glad you liked the Mike Carey. It's really the wittiness (and unexpected intelligence) of the narrative voice that makes it feel a cut above the norm -- otherwise it's very derivative of Raymond Chandler by way of Buffy, as you say. I enjoyed the second one, and have the third still to read.

I'm tempted to break my "no new books until I've reduced my TBR shelves" rule for Carey :-)
