a friend of mine has a balcony garden, and she makes her own fertilizer/ compost. just buy a large tote and start filling it with compostable scraps. you'll want to aerate it and will want to leave the lid on; the smell can get bad. if water collects in it, you should collect the water and use it as compost tea for the plants. her garden grew wonderfully this way!

oh and mites... i think spraying the leaves with soapy water would work? it should clog their breathing tubes, etc
you might want to make sure it won't block the plant's pores via google, though.

I totally agree with this. Compost is fantastic on my garden, and then you don't have to use icky chemicals.

actually, this also. add it to your compost and sprinkle some on the dirt after you plant. the little guys love that stuff!

The organic farms I've worked on have always stressed the importance of using both compost and manure (or something similar) for fertilizer. I bet you could get by on just compost, though. Just make sure you have enough nitrogen-rich things going into it.

Thanks! I'll definitely get some of those herbs! Maybe I can build a little wall of herbs in front of my balcony. :-)
