i... don't understand the problem. it is perfectly possible to buy used vegan shoes; in fact, that's what the majority of my shoe collection consists of. what's the contradiction?
do you follow a vegan diet or a vegan lifestyle?anathonSeptember 28 2008, 05:19:42 UTC
It depends on where you stand on your veganism and the thought that went into the choice. I am still in the early stages and I certainly will not condemn anyone for making the choice to go vegan. And since I cannot afford to totally revamp everything I own, certain items will remain unvegan until they wear out and are replaced. At that time, I will choose a vegan option that is hopefully fair trade. I would consider myself a hypocrite to wear leather shoes at that point

Frankly, I've tried a lot of shoes. Birkenstocks are by far the most comfortable. I've tried the vegan versions of Birks. They suck. I don't have the money to go blow on a bunch of shoes that may not work for me before I find a new brand that I like, so I will continue to get my 2 pairs of leather Birkenstocks repaired and resoled for as long as I can. ONce they wear out ... I dunno. But it's been 5 years since I decided that, and I still have shoes.
I think Birkenstock actually makes a synthetic version of their shoes! (If yours ever do wear out, which.. I think Birks are made of magic and last forever)
There was another post on the community a few days ago wherein the issue of leather re-use was discussed. Don't know if you saw that, but the point about thrift vs image was considered.
