I know this has been posted once before but there have been only several (about 10 or so) comments on it, and I’m really wondering what the majority of people think about the matter.

I was reading up on something else on wikipedia about cloning (or something similar I can’t recall) when I came across the article of in vitro meat.

Well, I ( Read more... )

Eating meat is still objectifying animals and placing them in the category of property.

Animal products are not necessary for survival.

There is no need for in vitro meat, much less any meat consumption, other than to satisfy people's precious little palates. Just like happy, free-range organic meat, this in vitro bullshit is just going to be used to make a small niche market feel warm fuzzies about actively eating living beings.

yes. plus with in vitro meat there will be plenty of animal testing. especially when it gets rolling and people want certain kinds of cow for example and eventually weird animal combinations.

you know there will be a weird demand for this crap.

It's just so unnecessary. Why not just go vegetarian instead of trying (and failing) to justify meat eating? If people are willing to buy and eat vat meat for the purpose of lessening animal suffering, why not just stop being a hypocrite and go all the way? Bullshit excuses piss me off.

"Overall, I think that in vitro meat isn’t horrible, as the animals used, from what I’ve read, aren’t killed or tortured. Plus it can be a way healthier alternative for people who do consume meat and it will use up less materials and land so it’s good for the environment! Well that ‘s my opinion in the matter, what’s yours?"

1. Why don't you assume the animals used are 'killed or tortured'? I can't imagine scientists finding a cow in a beautiful field and unobtrusively taking a tissue sample to replicate in the laboratory. I can understand the whole 'a few deaths for the good of the many' argument, but I think it's a little naive to believe the few in this situation are able to live good lives. Where did you read that?

2. I have read conflicting data stating that it will actually be worse for the environment in terms of kilo per kilo production - and this is before factoring in the environmental costs of prior research and creating places for production ( ... )
