anonymous comments. course of action.

i think vegancooking is an amazing community. not only because of you guys, but the majority of anonymous comments that i've seen throughout the long history of the community have all been so awesome and informative. (we're lucky that we haven't encountered any trolls or spambots. to my knowledge, at least.) we recently ran across one today that ( Read more... )

I don't remember ever coming across an anonymous commenter.
Maybe I don't read enough comments. (o;

that's why i was surprised that we haven't been overrun. especially considering we're a vegan community, and who the heck the mods are!
(haha. p.s. the folks at anti-vegan hate the majority of us.)

hey! that's pretty neat! (i've never seen open ID actually used on LJ before.)

i chose the "just this one time" option instead of the "always" option, so i don't know if it'd look any different the other way.

I've seen open ID used on LJ before and was baffled. I thought someone made their username that of their website to pimp it. But then wondered how they got their username to be so long.
Oh silly me.

As easy as it is to obtain an openID/livejournal account, I don't think it's a high bar to joining the conversation; therefore I don't think it'd be a big deal to close anon commenting. They're so few and far between, really, that it shouldn't have a big impact.

That being said, I'm a bit surprised that this comes in response to today's incident. Perhaps I'm missing something or am not privy to some information (in which case I apologize), but I just can't see that this is definitively intentional pimpage. People have recommended non-vegan vegetarian books before; while usually with the note that most things in it are easily veganizable, not exclusively so, and it hasn't warranted backlash. Personally, if I'm cooking niche Cuisine, I have found that I have to refer to non-vegan sources and adapt them myself, as little (or none) exists otherwise. Also, the initial response seemed to me to be based on an opinion of Hare Krishna that was frankly a bit insulting, and not the actual book. I wrestled earlier today with making a point ( ... )

Yeah, I completely agree! I have that cookbook, and it's a totally valid suggestion. Lots of vegan or vegan-izable recipes, and as far as I can tell it is devoid of any "cult" agendas or leanings!

I agree with this. I was going to comment in the actually post, but this is probably a better place to do so ( ... )

I don't think I've ever seen a rude comment in this community that was anonymous.

I was just about to come and say that I haven't seen rude anonymous comments, when my bf yelled "NO! POST AN ANONYMOUS COMMENT WITH 'FUCK YOU, FUCKER!" :p

I haven't really noticed any anonymous comments in here over the years. Or maybe I have, but they weren't noteworthy (I'm not really going to remember if someone says "Try adding cinnamon for a lovely depth of flavour"). I assume I would remember if an anonymous jerk decided to be inflammatory.

So, I don't see it as that much of a problem. If we can't really screen anonymous comments, I think we should just let them be. If anything is nasty, then one of the mods can catch it, or someone can alert us to the problem, and it can be dealt with.

If we get an influx of nasty or spammy anon comments, then we could rethink it. But for now I think keep it open and as is.

looking at the poll results so-far, it looks like it'd be okay to currently leave it as it is, however nearly 10% of aggravation is a little higher than i was hoping. :-/

I don't know that that is particularly an accurate result.
There wasn't a "huh? I hadn't even noticed anonymous comments" option in the poll, so I didn't select any of the options. Perhaps other people had the same thought.
