name the stars: a romance in seven parts
{or a horror story in four}
by vega-of the-lyre.

....We have not touched the stars,
nor are we forgiven, which brings us back
to the hero’s shoulders and the gentleness that comes,
not from the absence of violence, but despite
the abundance of it. The lawn drowned, the sky on fire,
the gold light falling backward through the glass
of every room. I’ll give you my heart to make a place
for it to happen, evidence of a love that transcends hunger.
Is that too much to expect? That I would name the stars
for you? That I would take you there? The splash
of my tongue melting you like a sugar cube?

+ summary: In the months since Nero, Chapel and McCoy have been dancing a peculiar waltz around one another. An away mission gone wrong provides a brutal sort of catalyzing agent for their relationship.
+ Leonard McCoy/Christine Chapel, R, post-Star Trek: XI, 13 510 words.
+ Warnings for strong horror themes, violence, death, sex, and lots of trauma.
+ With apologies to Richard Siken for cruelly stripping his lovely words of all context (and, unfortunately, formatting); and to Steven Moffat and Stephen King, for lifting some of the best elements of some of their stories. [Edit 15/12/10: the monsters are a direct play off the Vashta Nerada from Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead; though I've personally imagined their origins and/or purpose in to be different from those creatures specifically, the way they operate and their effects are virtually the same. The atmosphere is intended to invoke that of King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and his God of the Lost, but that thread is, I think, more implicit than the other. If you have any questions do let me know!]
