The first book I read by Barry Lopez was an anthology of essays. I was captivated by his profound sense of the spiritual and naturalistic qualities of the land. He was a successful nature photographer who gave up the camera because it narrowed his way of seeing and knowing the land. how GREAT that you finally found that book again! something similar happened to me with the essays of Brenda Peterson "Living by Water".....

for me some of the most beautiful writing about nature and spirit in the English language.
I lost this book also and needed years to find another copy in an online used book store.

Thanks for mentioning that. I surfed and read Peterson's article "Saving seals" on the Orion website. I can relate to her background and ideas, and I love how she writes about it with humour! I'll keep an eye open for more of her work.
