Improbable Phrases Meme

May 26, 2006 22:05

Wow, this meme was interesting because it alerted me to something I didn't know about: the SIPs function on Amazon.

Pick ten of your favorite books, look them up on Amazon.com, and find the list of Statistically Improbable Phrases for those novels. Pick a few SIPs from each book, list them here, and then have people guess what books they are. (Obviously, using Google or Amazon to figure it out is cheating.).

(The first sentence says "favorite books" rather than novels, so just to warn you, not all the following is fiction, and some of the fiction is in collections. Also, I kept getting books that either had no SIPs, or had only one or two. I had to use the ones that had only one or two SIPs, because I was running out of books.)
  1. subjunctive instant replay, crab canon, strange loops (Goedel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, by Douglas Hofstadter. Guessed by doctroid)
  2. two boggies (Bored of the Rings, by The Harvard Lampoon. Guessed by doctroid)
  3. garden between dawn, monstrous clever fellow, manly thing
  4. fire walk, hot fudge sundae
  5. redwood steps
  6. marvellous sunset city, onyx castle, yellow silken mask
  7. eighth square, little golden key, beautiful soup (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking-Glass, by Lewis Carroll. Guessed by vardissakheli)
  8. dark pallor, long rapier, black altar
  9. marble room, yellow sign
  10. young sahr, war unicorn, force line

Now watch as I forget which books they are.

EDIT: I forgot to mention ronebofh as the source of this meme, although I suppose all kibologists know that already.
