Oh, this is just perfect. I haven't really thought much about Mary's character, but this so rings true I could picture this being a missing scene. And the last line is awesome.

I don't really spend much time analyzing Downton Abbey characters, but Mary does strike me as a person who only pretends for others (as opposed to Elena, who keeps playing parts for herself).
