Caroline Forbes: Woman Love Fest, Day 2

Sep 10, 2011 18:41

There is a music video under the cut. I owe idrilka my firstborn for all the beta reading she does for me.

I probably first heard this song in the original version, since both of my parents are Queen fans, but I don't remember it at all. I got all crazy about „The Show Must Go On” only after watching Moulin Rouge, and it doesn't matter that later on I grew to love how Freddie Mercury sang it. In my mind „The Show Must Go On” will always have a face of Nicole Kidman and will always be about a girl who is too proud to give up and show her weakness, even though (or perhaps: because?) she knows she is going to die soon. Only while writing this entry did I realize that the lyrics are much more ambigious than I originally thought and the song might be perceived as bitter or desperate. That's why I decided to post this version ― I need Nicole Kidman singing „I'll top the bill” for this song to be undoubtedly about pride. The kind of pride I find in Caroline.

Caroline is perfectly aware of the fact that she looks like a Southern Belle (I loved it when she chose a Gone With The Wind theme for Founder's Day). And she uses it as a shield. Everything is always perfect in the Forbes land, hair is flawless and heels are high. Caroline notices every single nasty thing people say about her, and then she smiles and pretends she didn't, because that's the way she copes. People think she is shallow, silly and vain? Fine, she'll play shallow, she can handle this, Caroline Forbes can handle just about anything. She doesn't look strong. She doesn't run around with a gun, she rarely kicks evil asses, she is not a leader, so you don't expect much. But when you look close enough, you notice that no crisis has ever broken her; she gets up every single time. It's not healthy what she does; she'd probably be better off if she admitted to being hurt more often (it's not like she doesn't do it at all) or asked her friends for help. Yet still I can't help but admire her for her impressive inner strength. Inside my heart is breaking, my makeup may be flaking, but my smile still stays on.
