"Don't tell me not to live just sit and putter ('puttah'), life's candy and the sun's a ball of but-tah, don't bring around a cloud to rain on my parade..."
How did he convince the others about this one? "Hey fellas, let's do Barbra!" Steve hangs his head, hair falling forward to obscure his face, dismayed that his brother's strange penchant for show tunes has made itself known.
Yes!!! That's my unofficial theme song, but only when David sings it. The attitude is perfect and it's...well I have a real thing for David's voice on that whole album... *blushes prettily*
So that was David's choice? I sort of thought Rich had begged him to sing it and David only agreed when Rich promised him a foot massage and his very own Naked Squirrel.
It's nice to know that David has a snarl in his vocal repertoire. And the groans and yells, like in "Obscure Alternatives"...sigh.
I'm pretty sure David ran the show with song choice. I have read in old articles where he's stated that the only exposure he had to music as a kid, outside of his sister's 45s which he and Steve always sneaked and played, were the showtune albums his parents had. South Pacific is the one I've seen mentioned several times; too bad they never covered "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair!" LOL!
David did choose the few other covers the band did. I wish they'd officially recorded "Doo-doo-doo-doo Heartbreaker". I only have that on one cassette, pretty interesting to hear David try and imitate Jagger. "A 10 year old girl, on a street cor-nah..."; his south London accent was really thick back then.
It's good to hear all these things, because by the time I discovered Japan, they had broken up and there was very little promotion of David's solo stuff here. ( I was sent a mix tape by a pen pal with some Japan stuff among others.)I had to hunt the import record stores every week to find stuff. It was most depressing. But at least I can say I was into the music first, because that was all I had.
