Non-linear systems is not going well. Firstly, the homework assigned today has questions where I don't even understand what being asked. Also, the professor is giving a takehome midterm over fall break, when I'll be in Worcester. (For those who didn't know, I'll be visiting Oct 22-25.) In the strictest sense, anything that burns is converting matter to energy, although at an outstandingly inefficient rate, so we'd have to include chemical explosives and firebombs.

No, you don't lose mass when burning or exploding things; you're just messing with the chemical composition of the stuff being burned. Usually, you're just adding oxygen.

No, John's right. There's a ridiculously small amount of mass lost in any exothermic reaction.
