Because, like, it's so totally dead-on.
Srsly.
I mean, even reading La Dame Aux Camelias doesn't redeem any one of these characters, reality-based or not. Something tells me that Parisian middle-upper-class artsy-fartsy society circa 1830-1840 was a whole lot closer to, say, current Hollywood/New York more-money-than-brains idiocy than I'd care to admit.
Violetta as played by Paris Hilton, anyone?

No no, madame - you misread me!
I in no way meant Dumas' or Verdi's characters are "cardboard cutouts", they ARE real people, yes - however, after reading the novel and going back through various contemporaries' reminiscences,....
I still wouldn't want to be in the same room with any of them. "Society" bores the crap outta me, is all.
