Yes, I think it could accurately be described as strategic constructivism. And, no, the thread is not an anomaly, you see this (or variations) all the time in queer by choice internet discussions and in news sound bites.

I think it's interesting to read gay activist sound bites attached to, in particular, "gay gene" articles, which often simultaneously claim that (1) this is "further evidence" that social conservatives, ex-gays, or whoever the enemy du jour are wrong to claim that sexual orientation can be chosen, and (2) that sexual orientation is complex and equal rights should not be based on whether sexual orientation is innate. The manipulation of both ends of the false choice-innate dichotomy for political ends is a wonder to behold.
