Buffy stared at the projection screen, trying to keep herself from slipping into the same day dream about Parker that had distracted her during psych. It was hard, though, and the fact that her art history professor droned on and on about this brushstroke or that daub of paint made it that much worse.

She still didn’t understand what she had done wrong. Was it something she said? Something she didn’t say? Had she offended him somehow and he wanted somebody less offensive-like? Was she just not Parker’s type? The questions kept swirling in Buffy’s head until she felt like crying. Maybe on its own, this wouldn’t be as big of a deal, but combined with the sucktastic first few weeks of college, she felt overwhelmed. That was mild. More like drowning in quicksand very, very slowly.

“...see you next class.” Buffy’s head snapped up and she realized that she’d just missed an entire lecture. Again.

Keeping her head down, she quickly packed up her bag and squeezed her way through the aisles, keeping her eyes glued to the ground. She was about to step into the aisle when she ran into a person standing there.

“Sorry,” Buffy muttered, looking up. And up. And up some more for good measure until she met a pair of amused green eyes that she recognized as Sam Winchester’s, the cute sophomore who always sat in the back of class but didn’t really draw that much attention to himself. “I, uh, didn’t see you,” she stammered out, trying to fight down the urge to blush from embarrassment.

“It’s fine,” he said, stepping aside so that she could move past him. “No harm, no foul.” She gave him a small smile and started walking down the stairs that led to the bottom of the auditorium the class was held in.

“Are you OK?” he asked as he held the door open for her.

“Yeah,” she answered, trying to sound like she . “Extra peachy.” She glanced at the clock on the wall and realized that she had less than five minutes before she was supposed to meet up with Willow and Oz at Xander’s new, super secret new job. “I have to go. See you next class,” she said, leaving as quickly as she could, barely hearing Sam’s shouted, “Good-bye.”

She had made it nearly halfway to her dorm before she stopped to take a deep breath. She didn’t know why she felt so ruffled by that. Yeah, Sam was cute and all, but there was still all the stuff with Parker, and she was probably just projecting all of that onto Sam. Yeah, that was it, she decided as she started walking again. Just emotion projecting, that was all.

~*~*~
Sam had been walking back from a late night at the UC Sunnydale library when he saw the smoke spewing from one of the buildings on campus. His mind jumping to supernatural conclusions, he sprinted towards the direction of the fire, hoping that he was wrong. Although, given that this was Sunnydale of all places, he wasn’t that hopeful.

Slowing down as he arrived, he spied four figures illuminated by the glow of the fire as the fire trucks roared in and screeched to a stop by the burning building. Two of them were on the ground, although they were both struggling to get up. One of the remaining figures, a woman, started walking away before one of the people on the ground got to his feet and started talking to her. The woman stood there for a moment before calmly hitting him on the head with the stick. Sam watched him crumble to the ground as the woman started walking again. Not thinking, Sam moved to try and intercept her before she did any more damage.

“Buffy?” Sam asked, barely recognizing the freshman girl from his art history class he might have been working his way up to asking out at some point. Her hair was full of dirt, which was also streaked across her face and the clothes she was wearing. He had thought that something off with her these last few days, but he hadn’t realized it was quite this bad. He couldn’t think of anything his dad or Dean or any of the hunters he had met describe something like this.

She studied him for a moment before speaking. “Parker bad. Sam pretty,” she grunted out.

Sam stood there, stunned. What? He had heard something about her and that Casanova-wannabe, but he hadn’t really paid attention. But, what?

Buffy took that momentary pause to walk around Sam and continue off to wherever she was going. She was quickly joined by two more people, one of whom he recognized as Buffy’s roommate, Willow. He watched them for a moment before shaking his head and walking back to his dorm.

Willow had a good head on her shoulders, he reasoned. If she was looking out for Buffy, she was going to be OK.

Spying Sam a few yards ahead of her, Buffy made a face. She needed to do this, and the sooner she did it the better. She had mostly recovered from her beer-induced adventures into cave-Buffy, but she remembered parts of what had happened, and her interaction with Sam just happened to be one of them.

“Sam, wait up!” she called out, praying he didn’t speed up. There was no way she would be able to catch him without using Slayer speed if he did. Fortunately, he slowed down and turned around to face her.

“I just wanted to apologize for last night,” she started, trying to fight down the blush that was threatening to take control of her face. “I really wasn’t OK when you asked me if I was, and there was alcohol and general badness associated with that, but I worked through what was making me not OK, and I’m babbling now, and I’m really sorry,” she finished lamely. Her face felt like it was on fire, and all she wanted to do was have the ground swallow her whole. Seriously, now would be of the convenient timing.

“It’s fine, Buffy,” he said, giving her a warm smile. “Besides, how can I blame you for hitting Parker over the head?” There was nothing negative in his voice, just warm humor that wasn’t directed at her.

She returned his smile hesitantly and shrugged. “Like I said, I had issues I needed to work out,” she told him, feeling her blush tone down somewhat. “So, I’ll see you in class then?”

“See you then,” Sam replied, giving her a full-on smile before walking away. She followed him with her eyes for a moment, trying to ignore the tingling sensation in her stomach that had gotten her in this mess in the first place. There would be no more following of it, not for a very long time.

But still, she thought as she walked to meet Willow for lunch before psych, if she was interested--which she totally wasn’t, but still--there was something about Sam that made her stop and wonder.
