“Do you think I’m boyfriend material?” Lucifer asked as they sipped drinks in his loft.
Dawn frowned at him. She opened her mouth and then snapped it closed. “You’re asking the absolutely wrong person.”
“You’ve been on this planet for fifteen years. You have to know what makes a good long-term partner.”
She turned away and walked to the balcony. “Everyone has different requirements. Why do you think eHarmony and Tinder exist? They are two sides of the same coin, the attempt to make a connection - one with self-evaluation, the other with the closest geographical person.”
“That’s not a helpful answer,” he told her as he followed her steps to the balcony.
“I told you I was the wrong person to ask.” She closed her eyes and breathed in the night air. “I have never seen a good relationship. I’ve never seen something that lasted.”
“Surely-”
“Lucifer,” she said as she opened her eyes to pin him with a glare. “Never. My sister is the Slayer, my babysitters were demons and witches. Half of them are dead and the other half have sworn off anything that looks like a relationship - with either sex. The few who haven’t, they are more like you and all those people Chloe interviewed. Everyone is in for the fun and no one cares or gets too attached. Meaningless.”
He stared at her for a long moment. “You’re a virgin.”
Dawn felt heat creep up her neck, choking her slightly. “So?”
“As far as the mortals are concerned, you’re nearly thirty. How can you have never shared in carnal delight?”
“Because I want too much,” she managed to say. “I want someone who knows me. And I want to be able to share about the supernatural with them. I need someone who understands that the rest of the world comes first - before them, before me.” She looked away from his penetrating gaze. “I want perfect. I want something that can never exist. And I don’t know if it’s me or because I’m the Key. But I can’t settle. So I just stopped trying.”
“Maybe you’re not meant for humans,” Lucifer said softly as he approached her.
“Maybe,” she agreed. “But this is my life. I’ve accepted it.”
“That’s such a useless way to live.”
“I watched too many people live with broken or hardened hearts. Or settle for anything so they don’t feel alone.” She shook her head. “I won’t do it. I have other things to worry about.”
“Tell me you’ve a least been kissed.”
“Of course.”
“Really kissed?”
Lucifer didn’t wait for an answer. He lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers. That was all that touched before he pulled away.
Dawn’s eyes fluttered opened. She touched his cheek and shook her head. She walked back into the loft and grabbed her purse. “If another case looks interesting - and the detective doesn’t object - give me a call.”
She continued to the elevator only to find Chloe coming out of the doors.
Chloe stopped and looked between her and Lucifer. “I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have…I should go.”
“No,” Dawn grabbed her. “I need to clear something up. There is nothing going on between me and Lucifer and there never will be.” She looked back where Lucifer was watching them. “I’m Lucifer’s aunt. His father is my big brother.”
Chloe looked between them in surprise. “Oh.”
“Most people can’t wrap their heads around it. And given the age difference between me and Lucifer or Amenadiel… I just leave it at family friend. But I didn’t want you to think that we were hiding anything sexual just because we weren’t being honest about our relationship.”
“Of course, I’m so sorry,” Chloe said turning to follow her to the elevator.
“Don’t be. It is what it is.” She looked past her at Lucifer. “I’ve spent my whole life with whatever was thrown in my path. I choose to acknowledge what we are.” She grinned at Chloe. “Besides, only family could look at that face and not go running mad.”
She left the two of them with a soft chuckle at her joke.

“I need your help.”
“What’s going on, Lucifer?” Dawn asked as she clutched the phone to her ear.
“The detective, she’s been poisoned.”
“By the serial killer that died in a shootout?”
“Yes.”
“Dammit. What do you need me to do?”
“Meet us at the precinct. Fast.”
“On my way.”

Dawn stalked past the desk sergeant without a word and made her way to Chloe’s desk. She did not see Lucifer until she spotted his back in the forensic lab.
She crossed the station and entered the lab just in time to hear the forensic scientist complain about having to put on pants.
“Lucifer,” Dawn interrupted.
He and Chloe turned to her.
“Who is this?” the scientist asked.
“Ella Lopez, this is P.I. Dawn Summers.”
“And my partners, Angel and Connor,” Dawn introduced her companions. “Now, does someone want to tell me what the hell is going on?”
“We were just telling Ella that we’re worried someone else, um, out there might be poisoned,” Chloe said.
“Oh, I doubt it,” Ella replied. “I asked every hospital in the area to report anything even resembling a poisoning. So far, haven’t heard a peep.”
“That doesn’t rule out another poisoning,” Angel said darkly, his gaze on Chloe.
“Are we working with them on this?” Ella asked Chloe, gesturing to Dawn, Angel, and Connor.
“Yes. They were privately retained to follow up on this and we can use the help.”
Ella nodded and moved on. “So I did find a syringe at the scene of Carlisle’s death. In theory, he could have poisoned someone else.
“Hmm,” Connor grabbed a set of gloves from the box on the table and slipped them on. “May I?”
Ella handed him the syringe. “He destroyed whatever was inside so we can’t create an antidote from it.” She looked at all of them. “Dick move, right? I mean, that’s why I’m glad no one’s reported to any hospitals, ‘cause without the antidote, ugh, they’d end up just like the other victims.” She looked at the timeline of symptoms on one of her papers. “You know, first a bloody nose, followed by fainting, then seizures-”
“We get the point,” Chloe said.
“We’re going to see if one of our contacts can help,” Angel said.
“Could they?” Lucifer asked.
Angel and Connor exchanged a look. “We don’t know.”
“But anything is worth a shot,” Connor said. He reached out and squeezed Dawn’s arm.
“I’ll stay with them. Let me know if you find anything.”
Angel nodded and left, Connor followed after a final look at all of them.
“I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but they were a little…strange,” Ella declared as Lucifer stepped out to talk to Amenadiel.
“There are few people I trust more,” Dawn told her.
“And why should we trust you?”
“You have no reason to,” she admitted. “But there is also no evidence you shouldn’t.”
Ella pursed her lips before nodding. “Okay. But I’m keeping an eye on you.”
“Expect nothing less.”

Chloe moaned as she started to wake up. “Dammit, Lucifer,” she breathed.
“Don’t curse him too much,” Dawn said softly. “You passed out and all bets were off.”
“Where-”
“Lucifer and Dan are following up on your last lead.”
“My daughter…did Dan bring her here?”
“She’s in the hall. One of the volunteers has been keeping her occupied while they drew more blood and put tubes in uncomfortable places. And checked other places for bleeding.”
Chloe grunted, shifting and realizing what it was Dawn meant. “Is she - is she scared?”
“She’s being a champ, but yeah.” Dawn gave her a sad smile. “I was twice her age when my mom was in the hospital, and didn’t handle it half as well.”
Chloe teared up. “Don’t let her see me die,” she pleaded softly.
“You’re not allowed to die on me, Chloe Decker.”
She shook her head and wiped away the tears. “I want to see Trixie before…”
“Mommy!” Trixie’s voice made them both look at the door.
“Hey, Monkey.”
“Daddy and Lucifer left Dawn to look after us,” Trixie said. “She tells some really cool stories.”
“She does?” Chloe said a little worried.
“There is a superhero named Buffy and she fights vampires and demons and zombies!”
“Oh, really…”
“In my defense,” Dawn hurried, “when I’m working on multiple things, I tend to go back to the stories I know best. It doesn’t require much censoring, so it’s perfect for babysitting.”
Her phone made a growling sound.
“What’s that?” Trixie asked.
“A vampire,” Dawn said, fishing it from her pocket. “It used to be a werewolf howling, but it kept making nearby dogs howl.” She read the text.
“What is it?” Chloe said, reading Dawn’s face.
“Connor and Angel are still chasing other options but Lucifer and Dan ran into a dead end.” She swallowed. “They’re splitting up and will be back as soon as they can.”
“Can you tell us more stories?” Trixie asked.
“I’m sure Dawn has other things-”
“I’d love to,” Dawn cut her off. “So what would you like to hear about? Vampires, werewolves, Slayers, demons?”
“Do you know anything about mummies?” Trixie said.
“Do I know anything about mummies? I lived with one for a week!” Dawn told her before launching into a carefully edited version of the Scoobies’ encounter with an Incan mummy.
