okay, so this is lovely. i think the despair suffused with the desire for life is what's truly affirming. there were several lines which really stuck out to me, namely:

It was true when he told Ang that he wasn’t sure of anything anymore. He was never sure of her either.

Strangely it only hurts more.

because yes; because that's how their relationship is; because what's the most heartbreaking is that things were never resolved between them (& the current of guilt i imagine jimmy will/would feel because of it).

and yes to richard finding jimmy, because that's what he would do, in all his stability, all his steadfastness. he would track jimmy like prey or a prize, would find each broken piece of him along the way, would press each of them into jimmy till he (does it matter which?) was whole again ( ... )

Thanks, girl! ♥

I'm glad you liked it. I really wanted to explore Jimmy going through all the stages of grief (which he does) and how he reaches for Richard to pick up the pieces and forget about everything at first but then eventually learns that he really does look at him as an equal and cares about him (them sitting back to back under the tree and how Richard tells him he'll just be looking at him instead of looking up at him). But yes clinging to life after death is def a theme too.

I def feel the same-Jimmy and Angela's relationship was so tumultuous and was never really resolved..even after Jimmy pushed for marriage. it's so sad and I can def see Jimmy racked with all that guilt.

Oh girl, that sounded beautiful you should totally start writing this stuff ;)

how about:

after sixteen hours & forty-three minutes, richard finds jimmy strung out & shattered on a princeton hotel room floor. he has things to give jimmy; broken things yet to be mended; pieces to be pressed into the hollow brokenness till jimmy is made whole again. some of these pieces are jimmy's, & some of them are richard's own. richard isn't sure which is which, anymore. he isn't sure if he minds.

in the morning there will be a road home, open & lit by staggering daylight. for now, he sits side by side with jimmy, arm hanging off the side of his chair, three inches of space between his tired hand & jimmy's own.

he feels certain that if he were to touch jimmy, the dam would burst. his own heart is made of parchment, of paper scraps, torn & faded. in the quiet stillness, his inhalation crackles through the air, a terrible weight. he steels himself. he must make it a stone.
