one birthday cake and two stationary cards

I made this cake for my mom today. It's totally not what I thought it would be.  I wanted to try for the first time to make butter cream frosting and I think I did it wrong. I'm guessing two things. I didn't sift the sugar and I didn't add enough. I'm not sure. The instructions didn't say anything about sifting, but I can see it being lumpy and
