Chapter Thirty- Seven

“Ka-san, tea is ready,”

The woman made her way to the table in the center of the room as her elder daughter brought the tray and seated herself opposite to her.

The youngest bounced into the room, a handmade jasmine coronet upon her head, and snuggled up to her mother.

“Otosan wa?” Chichiro asked pouring the tea. Her mother craned her neck to peek through the open door to see her husband standing in the balcony, a letter in hand.

“Anata?” she called wondering what was holding him. He turned to face his family and his wife paled at her husband’s crestfallen
expressions.

“Is it Ryosuke?” she whispered almost hesiatantly. The youngest sat up but Chichiro didn’t budge and continued pouring the tea.

“He’s fighting in the battle today,” he said his voice almost hoarse.

Chichiro dropped the teapot.

“Shida get down from there!”

“Oh shut it you scaredy cat!”

Kamiki frowned at the figure in the higher branches of the tree and turned to Katsumi, a bespectacled boy sulking over a broken wooden device.

“Would you get over that stupid whatchamathingi!” Jun exclaimed smacking him on the head.

The boy glared at him.

“It’s was a one of a kind automatic shoe polisher, which YOU broke,” he retorted and turned away.

“No use in relying on technology Katsumi-chan, the human being does wonders by itself,” Jun stated proudly.

Katsumi returned to his sulking.

“What do you see Mirai-chan!” Jun boomed making Katsumi jump.

Kamiki frowned as they received no answer.

“SHIDA!”

The girl curled her fingers around the branches she was holding on for support as her eyes widened. The towering mountain beyond the lake was surrounded by thick gray storm clouds imbued with an erie blue tinge brought about by the constant lightning.
Hey eyes lingered upon the ships docked on the bank before catching sight of a strange smokey shape forming above the mountain.
She stared harder at the seemingly illusive shape as it took the form of an eye. Her fingers loosened as she felt it coming closer and she screamed and shut her eyes tight as it suddenly whizzed into her with a strange terrifying sound.

Kamiki sighed in relief as Jun caught the trembling girl.

“Shida what happened?” Kamiki asked anxiously but frowned as the girl even refused to open her eyes. Thunder sounded overhead as the freezing wind brushed the bare parts of his skin, making him shiver.

“Something, is about to happen,” said Katsumi quietly as it began to snow.

War is like a fire.

A roaring fire, a painfully tragic conflagaration that swallows you up whole with its destructive heat, turning everything you ever lived for, desired for, worked for to…dust. Ashes upon ashes, I cringe at the lingering scent of defeat…tears, sweat, blood.

I still remembered how my hands shook at the sound of blade upon blade, blade upon flesh…cry of victory, cry of defeat…cry of death. Pain and madness blended into one upon the battlefield.

The warmth of my companions was the only thing that kept me from freezing from the cold touch of the cruelty I was witnessing. Even the freezing snow felt mediocre next to this.

I was afraid that I would lose my way within this madness. How would I keep track of what I came to do? I was just watching, my blade in its sheath and already I felt like just this vision had already killed whithin me what was once…human.

“Morimoto-san, no matter what we do, they won’t die!”

The Samurai grasped his blade more tightly and scowled at the reality of his subordinates words. While some of the soldiers they fought were humans, they were exceptionally strong, and unnaturally fearless. Even the mighty Samurai army was having a hard time against them. The storm was doing them no good either as the visibility was continuously dropping.

Then there were those dark armored soldiers. No matter how many times his blade cut through their armor, they would immediately regenerate.

He gasped as a searing pain through his side made him stumble. His strength was leaving him. They had been fighting for hours, in the ice. He tried to push himself back up. Everything around him was a blur. He looked up and saw the faceless mask of his enemy and his raised blade.

“No, I cannot fall so easily!” he growled but his legs gave way. His breathing heavy, he watched the sword plunging towards him. But just as its tip was inches away from his heart, another blade blocked it with equal force. He gasped as he recognized the sword. His rescuer pushed the enemy back with a kick and spun around, his two swords slashing the soldier through his middrif. Morimoto’s eyes widened as the soldier turned to dust.

“Ryutaro!” he gasped as the boy helped him to his feet.

“Don’t worry Oyaji, we’re here to help,” he said, eyes sparkling with confidence.

Morimoto looked around in wonder as he saw several other youngsters, dressed in the same attire as Ryutaro with different weapons joining their fight. He was even more surprised when he saw the black armored soldiers disintegrate with a single strike of their weapons.

“Oyaji, fall back and recover, let us deal with them until then,” Ryutaro shouted over the wailing wind. He watched Ryutaro dodge an attack
from both sides before eliminating them with one go.

He nodded and gave his order.

“Yabu!”

The eldest pulled his sword out of an enemy and looked at his gasping friend.

“There are thousands of them,” Hikaru exclaimed.

He watched Yuto strung multiple arrows at the same time. Inoo and Keito both were conjuring lightnig attacks. Takaki and Chinen were moving the fastest, eliminating the most soldiers and counting them as they went.

“Ryosuke, can you do something?” Yabu asked the boy.

Ryosuke plunged his spear into a shadow soldier before giving a nod to his leader.

He rushed to higher ground. Aware of the samurai watching him, he closed his eyes to concentrate.

Daiki stopped in his tracks as he felt a sudden onset of heat. He turned around and gasped at the fiery bird coming into shape over Ryosuke.

“So, it’s them, the warriors of the old legend,” Morimoto gasped.

“I can’t believe it, they are actually real!” Kyomoto added just as surprised.

The fiery bird descended upon the soldiers, igniting the ground as it flew over them before colliding against the fortress gates and disappearing in a burst of flames.

“They’re all gone!” Chinen exclaimed at the barren ground left behind after Ryosuke’s attack. Yabu rushed towards him as Yuto caught the swooning boy.

“Yamachan, are you alright?”

“Yes, just a bit tired,” he replied weakly. Yabu frowned, placing a comforting hand on his forehead as Yuto pulled him closer, feeling him tremble from the lack of strength.

“Is it over?” Morimoto exclaimed surprised.

“No, they will release the rest, and its going to be double the amount,” Ryosuke said quietly. They turned around at the sound of hooves and were pleasantly surprised.

“Senpai?” Takaki exclaimed as Junno and the rest dismounted.

“Minister? What are you doing here?” Morimoto asked Yamapi, stunned.

“Kids, get on and get inside that fortress before the second wave comes, we’ll handle everything out here,” Yamapi ordered unsheating his blade.

Soon enough, they could see a mass of black appearing from the forest around. Daiki mounted Massu’s horse quickly and with
Yuto’s help pulled Yamada up behind him.

“Lets do this…again,” Tegoshi said with a glint of excitement in his eyes. Massu nodded.

They watched the 10 ride their way towards Nagaryuu’s mountain fortress.

“As soon as Yamada performs the final ritual, these soldiers will loose their immortality,” Ryo said to Morimoto.

“You may join us then,” Junno added.

“Hey guys, won’t that mean, sensei’s going to…,” Ohno began. Takizawa sighed.

“We have to get ourselves together,” he said resolute. Toma nodded.

Kame strung his bow.

“The boys need us,” he said with quiet resolve. Jin smirked.

“Let’s end this!”
