Chapter Twenty-Three
The falling rain was a deluge, completely drenching the man shivering underneath the mighty rack of clouds constantly building up over him.
He was rubbing his palms together in order to elicit the little bit of warmth available, squinting to get a better look beyond the premise of his safety.
He was waiting for the so-called warriors to arrive to this little village of Saitama and since the threat of the demon was still around, nobody else would dare to cross this bridge but them. It was the only reason that despite having his knees wobble from the fear of the unknown force that lingered nearby, he stood his ground.
He tried to imagine what they would be like…strong soldiers or mighty Samurai maybe. He squinted even harder as he saw a contorted mass of black approaching from beyond the bridge and despite having most of his facial muscles numbed by the relentless chill of the rainfall, he smiled in relief.
“Good day,” he hollered over the distant sound of approaching hooves. The company halted before him. They were dressed in complete black with a cloth covering the lower half of their faces. Despite the poor lighting, he could clearly tell, these were no Samurai.
“Ano…are you the demon slayers?”
“Yes,” one of them answered and he was surprised at the youthfulness of his voice.
“Oh, I see, well…you see the house over there, it belongs to the daughter of a famous scholar in the imperial court, and she’s a young child but has an amazing knowledge of all kinds of demons, I believe that she would be of great help,” he replied failing to hide the disappointment in his voice.
‘I guess these are just another bunch of adventure-seeking youth, to think this is the same group those demon slaying rumors are about,’ he thought frowning slightly.
Nevertheless, someone was better than no one.
“We would be honored to accept her assistance,” another answered. His tone was mature, strict, confident yet at the same time gentle and for some reason the man felt like he could put all his trust into him.
He nodded.
“Follow me please.”

“Perfect weather for visitors,” Yuki grumbled staring up at the leak in the thatched ceiling. She scowled.
“Well, at least the brat’s asleep,” she continued hauling the bucket and plopping it underneath the dripping water.
She jumped slightly as thunder sounded overhead followed closely by strong bangs on her front door.
Shuffling to the door she slid it open.
“Takagi-san?”
The man looked at her, slight excitement in his eyes.
“They’re here,”
“Well come in then, and you better not wet the carpets,” she replied irritated moving to the side to let him in. Three guys in black hoods entered behind him. The last one, stood frozen on the threshold.
“Where is the house that use to stand next to this one?” he asked, his voice hoarse. Yuki shifted uncomfortably. Nobody had asked about that family for years…his family.
“The residents abandoned the house and left a few years ago,”
“Why?”
“Why do you want to know?” she asked confused.
There was a strange tugging at her heart due to something she couldn’t exactly put her finger on.
“Kei, you coming?” Daiki called. Yuki’s eyes widened.
“Kei? Inoo Kei?”
All heads turned to fall upon Yuki. Inoo removed his cloth and looked at her intently.
“Yes, “ he replied surprised.
“Hey…how’d you know…,” Daiki began but was silenced immediately as Yuki flung herself onto the unsuspecting Kei.
“Um, okay then, take your time,” he concluded blushing and turning away to face the shocked trio behind him.

Dear Yuto,
I’m writing this letter to you because I know you would understand me best and will be able to deliver this message to the rest of the gang.
Something urgent came up and I have decided to depart for home. I don’t know when you will return so I decided to leave this letter with Tsubasa instead. Don’t be upset, you’re time is far more precious to be wasted on trivial matters such as good-byes.
I know this may seem like I’m not staying to support you, but I miss my parents too much and need them very much right now. I’m such a kid right?
Gambatte Yutocchi, you will be in my prayers and I will always be there, watching over you, promise.
Please apologize to the others for me, especially Chii, Daichan and Ryutaro. I love you all so much.
Your Nonidentical Twin,
Yamada Ryosuke
Ryosuke rolled the letter up neatly, putting away his brush and ink. Tying a ribbon around it, he held it out to Tsubasa who clutched the ribbon with her beak.
“Am I a coward?” he asked quietly. Tsubasa blinked. He jumped slightly as he felt soft hands on his shoulders.
“No, at least you backed out before the others started depending on you, unlike me who gave up right at the most critical moment,”
He turned around and faced Riku who gave his hair a friendly ruffle.
“Thank you for everything, and I’m sorry.”
She shook her head.
“In the future, there will be more who will have this opportunity, don’t blame yourself,” she said kindly.
Ryosuke nodded. She smiled as she watched him leave the room with his belongings, Tsubasa by her side.
“My lady, he has every quality of a Summoner, they’re not born in every era you know, and a summoner is the key to getting Nagaryuu out of his hidden chambers and out onto the battlefield,”
“I know, but he shouldn’t have to bear the burden of my mistake,” she replied sternly.
Tsubasa fluttered out of the window and onto the roof as she watched her master make his way stealthily down the hill and into the forest, a fox at his heels.
“Be safe, Ryosuke.”
