Chapter Twenty-Two
Nagaryuu had far more up his sleeves than we thought. It was amazing how we easily underestimated our own enemy. Shadow Soldiers, the Riders, Water Crawler and now different types of ancient demons appearing in every corner of the land. He and his uncanny methods often became the subject of my pondering. I wondered how he had access to such creatures? It was definitely some kind of dark magic because most of the monsters we faced had a very powerful and magical essence.
We had two members of our group that proved to be a great source of defence against this magic. Inoo-chan and Dai-chan both had this amazing ability. They could detect this dark essence miles away and always led us on hunts.
However, no matter how prepared we felt before every battle, the fight always seemed tougher than imagined. And to add to that, the difficulty level kept on rising.
I used to fear, were we capable enough for the real battle?
“Yabu, are you sure about this?”
The tall boy tilted his head to the side to catch Takaki’s worried features as the latter stared at the deserted surroundings.
“I know this is strange, but we did get an SOS call from here,”
“This is awful,” Chinen whispered.
Ryutaro scanned the deserted town. The sky was thick with clouds and the world was bathed in an eerie dim colour. The strengthening
breeze seemed like a warning. They didn’t have much time.
“They came in search for more elemental warriors like Sakura Sensei,” Takaki concluded.
“And left no one alive,” Hikaru added severely.
A heavy silence fell upon the group.
“Come, let’s split up and search for survivors,” Yabu said unsheathing his Katana. The rest followed, moving quickly into separate directions.
Hikaru entered the little house quietly, his weapon ready. His nose crinkled up at the strong stench and he couldn’t help but yell as he saw the blood drenched bodies littered on the floor. He gulped down the nausea and walked over the bodies but froze as he saw something else.
A trail of bloody claw prints leading to the adjoining room.
Ignoring the wild thumping of his heart which seemed so audible in the deathly silence, he moved forwards slowly, trying to blot out of his mind the consequences of a failed fight here.
However, he paused as he heard a slow, deep growl.
It seemed to be coming…from above him.
~
“Chinen daijobu?” Takaki asked concerned but was pleasantly surprised as the boy’s hardened features relaxed and he looked up to give him a smile.
“Hai, daijobu,” he answered spinning a tiny shuriken in his hand.
“Yokatta ne,”
“No need to worry about me…ni-chan, I’m braver now,” the younger chirruped making Takaki smile at the old call.
“Besides, all my training will go to waste if I freak out, Yamachan is always there to comfort me as well,”
“It’s really amazing, the connection the two of you have with each other, I’ve never heard of anything like this before,”
“That’s how I first knew him, we hadn’t really met, but I felt like he called out to me, it was fate ne?”
Takaki nodded gently, ruffling the younger’s hair in the process.
Just then they saw a figure slide into their vision, displacing dust all around him.
“Ryutaro!” Chinen exclaimed rushing to his aid. He looked up at the sound of clashing blades and found Takaki hovering over them,
blocking an attack from a shadow soldier.
More soldiers stood erect behind this one.
“Haven’t seen you guys in a while,” Takaki sneered kicking him back and slashing him through the middle. He frowned though as the
soldiers in front didn’t just approach him from the front as before, but rather besieged the trio.
“They’ve gotten smarter,” Ryutaro said, swallowing hard. Chinen pulled out his special shuriken.
“They’re not here alone,” Takaki said suddenly making Ryutaro widen his eyes. Thunder sounded overhead as it began to pour.
“They have a new leader.”
~
“Look, it’s going to be okay, I’m not going to hurt you,” Yabu said gently, extending his arm to the frightened little girl in the corner. The thunder and lightning was in no way a help as she cringed and scurried away.
Yabu could understand her fear. She was the only survivor of the house.
“I really won’t hurt you, I promise,” he cooed gently spreading his arms. She stared at him before inching closer. He smiled softly.
Her eyes widened once more and she moved back again quickly.
“What’s wrong?” Yabu asked concerned but he understood once he heard the sound of a blade being drawn behind him.
He unsheathed his own weapon and stood up quickly just in time to block an oncoming blow.
“Back…,”
Yabu’s voice died in his throat as he stared into the dark black eyes with its slit-like pupils…so foreign yet so familiar.
“Sh…Shoon?” he gasped but yelped as he was pushed back into the wall forcefully and the blade was pointed at his throat. A figure in a
hood entered the house swiftly and grabbed the screaming child.
“Akira, hurry,” she said rushing back outside, the child kicking and screaming in her arms.
“Is it really you?” he gasped. His heart was growing crazy, mind screaming.
Akira frowned as he noticed the outpouring of tears from the younger man in front of him. He pushed the blade deeper, cutting him slightly.
Yabu gasped and closed his eyes.
It confused him. The lack of resistance the other was showing.
Akira pulled the blade back. Somehow he didn’t like the sight of his blood.
Yabu slid onto the floor.
“Oh God,” he breathed shakily but gasped as he felt the onset of another attack.
“Akira, finish him off and let’s go!” the girl called, urgency in her voice. Akira sheathed his blade. He couldn’t stand the sight of the writhing
body before him.
Turning on his heels he covered his face with a black mask before leaving the room.
“Sh-Shoon,” Yabu called weakly, feeling his vision blurring.
“Come back.”
~
Hikaru stumbled out of the house, nearly tripping on the stairs, clutching his bleeding side. He let the rain wash away the blood but flinched as it stung badly. He could hear the sounds of approaching hooves.
He reeled backwards immediately as two horses cantered past him. Suddenly one halted and the rider twisted its body to look at him. He flinched at the sight of the bright eyes but felt his jaw drop as the rider pulled back her hood.
“Asuka?” he gasped, his knees failing him as he collapsed onto the wet ground. Her strange eyes scrutinized his face, as if searching for something.
“Siren,” came a distant voice, blurred in the rain.
“Be right there,” she yelled back at the first rider who, with a child wrapped in blankets was already near the exit.
With one last look, she pulled her hood back on and rode away.
Hikaru groaned as his wound burned and his vision started to fade.
“Come…back.”
The rain continued to pour.
