Marvin The Rescue anonymous May 31 2011, 21:19:32 UTC
I'd like a small little fic about how Sam got Marvin and the few difficulties that might have happened because Marvin's a rescue. Mostly though how Sam and Marvin bond those few years (or so) before Legacy.

So mostly fluff fic here. I'm feeling rather sentimental now.

Awww this would be wonderful! Seconded! (on a slightly off-topic note, I first thought this said "Marvin to the rescue". Que Marvin on the grid in an epic battle with kitty!rinzler to save Sam from CLU!...Dear gosh I need to go to bed...)

The thing about Ashley, and that should have been the first thing to tip him off, was that she never said anything directly. She never said she wanted to move in, she just dropped hints all over the place: a shirt, a book, a toothbrush, a bra, all the things she sort of forgot and never took back to her place.

He wasn't surprised when the same happened with the dog.

That should have been the second thing to tip him off: this charity event for abandoned animals that her favorite actor was going to attend. She skipped the after-after-party to hit the pound, and chose a fake handbag dog to match her fake Gucci bag. Her words, not Sam's. Red flag number three. If she'd stuck around, Sam's mind would've put the Kremlin to shame.

As it was, she lasted a month before she decided that Derelicte just wasn't cutting it any more in terms of housing arrangements. Her words, again. The dog must've classed as derelicte too because one morning Sam woke up to a half-emptied room, soft whining, and the smell of piss. His usual alarm was quiet. 5am ( ... )

The pooch followed close behind, from couch to fridge to bed to couch to fridge. Upstairs, downstairs. Sam inspected the fridge's barren shelves and found some crusty baloney in the back. He tossed it to Marv. He could sort of see why Ashley bailed ( ... )

Simply put, I enjoyed this. So much. It was beautiful, had a perfect Sam voice, and I loved the subtlety of Marvin sneaking into Sam's guarded heart. In short, you took my prompt and made something so sweet and lovely beyond what I could imagine. That ending is so bittersweet when you consider what happens next but it's nice to see Sam have some hope despite all the loss he's faced. Thank you so much.

One of my favorite parts was this because it's so Sam and so geeky:

He'd already removed the hysterical anti-piracy warnings. The games consortium was starting to behave like a lovechild of the MPAA and the RIAA, babysat by Apple. They wouldn't have been out of place in some of Encom's classics. Hell, the MCP had nothing on the IEIAA, the latest perpetrator in ugly acronyms and uglier attitudes.

I loved this entire fic and I'm saving it for future reads. :-)

Thank you, OP! I know it's not a proper rescue fic but the temptation of putting a millionaire bachelor and a handbag-type dog together by way of a random girlfriend was too strong. I hope Marvin shows up in more fic, he's adorable.

I still love this -- it's such a wonderful glimpse into the emptiness in Sam's life, and his sarcastic courage in the face of it. It's a great character study for Marv, too. <3

My endless thanks for going through it, Grey! It's a little indulgent - that pre-Legacy Sam should have a string of relationships that were never going to go anywhere is just my headcanon without any source support - but I'm happy if it works to get Marv in.

I like it, and I think it works well. I can definitely see Sam doing the "never commit/always leave them before they can leave me" thing with a string of successive girl (and boy?) friends -- it's a good fit for his trust issues.

:D Awesomeness. So much of it.

Love the accidental ending up with Marv--not your typical "rescue" scenario, but an utterly fitting one. The exploration of Sam's sabotaging efforts, the idea that there was a reason besides "adrenaline junkie" for him having to pull off the upload in-building the night of the release.

And I really, really appreciated the way you showed Sam--not just the positives, but his ongoing abandonment issues, irresponsibility, etcetera. This was a beautiful character portrayal in a quirky but apt way.

Thank you! I read Sam as somebody who ultimately wants to do the right thing but doesn't go about it in a mature, thought-through way. (But then, neither did Flynn from what I can tell.) Which is also why I loved that fic with him and Jet that got posted not long ago.
